Kipp Wieland
Portrait Artist |

I
was born in Iowa City in 1964 and
spent most of my life growing up in
Cedar Rapids, Iowa. My mother
encouraged me to pursue art and
facilitated my interest in the
subject by teaching me the names of
artists and their work from her Time
Life series of books that we had in
the family library.
My talent was recognized at the
schools I attended and during high
school my drawing and painting
skills were honed and refined by
Bill Ball. Ball did everything in
his power to assure I secured
several awards and scholarships,
eventually making it possible for me
to attend any school of my choice.
The most important skill that Mr.
Ball instilled in me was how to look
at the world with an artist's eye.
Focusing on detail, shadow, light,
line, and form. All of which are
very important for one to become a
skilled illustrator. While I showed
much talent and promise as an
artist, I did not develop my skills
to their higher level until he
taught me how to refine these skill
of observation as well as execution.
My parents thought it best to attend
a school close to home, regardless
of whether or not the institution
offered courses in animation, my
desired area of study. They decided,
since they were paying for the
remainder of the cost of my
education that the many scholarships
I had won did not cover, that I
would accept the Kansas City Art
Institute's offer, and in August of
1983 I headed down there to begin my
first year at the school.
After a year of the KCAI and not
being too terribly focused on
school, and also being distracted by
my second love, music, I decided to
just enter the world of work and
returned home to Iowa, where I
worked a few menial jobs for several
years until gaining employment as a
billboard artist and doing paste-up
at the local newspaper here in Cedar
Rapids. I accepted a job after that
in Chicago for two years doing
illustration, traditional camera and
printing work, and managing the CAD
department. After returning to Iowa
and wanting to work more on portrait
work (I always fit portraiture in
around all of my other jobs), I
decided to try something completely
different and went to work as a long
distance operator. I enjoyed it as a
job, and it gave me more motivation
to do artwork on my own time as
well. I spent ten years on the phone
until accepting a job at a toy
company designing packaging ad
re-touching photos.
I am very happy to be able to do my
own artwork for others, giving them
a timeless and unique gift in the
form of portraiture. I think it is
what God intended me to do, and it
is a way to share this gift with the
rest of the world on a personal
basis for them as well.
My work can range in size from an
18" x 24" pencil drawing up to a
three foot by two-and-a-half foot
acrylic painted portrait. |
